earth 2.0

The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it.

Neil deGrasse Tyson

The verdict is in by NASA climatologists, climate change is real and it’s getting worse every year. If you’re wondering what affect it will have on Oregon and more specifically District 2, the Oregon Climate Change Research Institute has done a detailed analysis of its local impact. In short, we will see higher temperatures and more drought which will have long term negative affects for humans, livestock, forests and agriculture. It’s not a pretty picture. We have to take steps now in order to reverse our current course.

“Earth has enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed.”
Mahatma Gandhi

The Paris Climate Accord is a step in the right direction as it puts climate change on the global stage. Seeing that its main focus is addressing greenhouse gasses, we can take a look at the next logical step, all pollution. To address this we need a total reboot of the way we do things on the planet. It will be a new beginning where humanity and the earth coexist in equilibrium. This can be done by looking at everything we do and change the things that negatively affect air, water and land. It’s a huge undertaking that will pay dividends to our future generations. Here are a few suggestions that we could address:

Air Pollution Reboot

Reduce and eventually discontinue operations that cause tropospheric ozone. This would eliminate things that produce nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds that are converted into ground ozone and increase temperatures.

Reduce and eventually discontinue operations that produce primary or secondary particle pollution. This would focus on the elimination of anything that produces ash, soot, diesel exhaust and chemicals into the air.

Water Pollution Reboot

Reduce nutrients pollution that causes algae blooms and depletes oxygen levels in the water. This would target runoff fertilizers, wastewater and sewage.

Reduce carbon dioxide emissions to lesson ocean acidification.

Create a fleet of garbage ships that collect suspended matter in our rivers and oceans.

Reduce and eventually discontinue ocean oil drilling and ocean transportation to eliminate oil spills.

Land Pollution Reboot

Transition agriculture industry from heavy nitrogen use to organic farming practices.

Eliminate pesticides that cause bee sudden death syndrome.

Invest in biodegradable plastics and reduce the use of petroleum based plastics.
